Generations United: A Return After 40 Years
In 1998, 40 years after my grandfather’s journey to Bulgaria, I set foot in the charming village of Kochovo, the birthplace of both my grandparents.
My curiosity about my Bulgarian heritage was sparked by the letters and pictures that had traversed generations, exchanged among our relatives. It was a heritage that beckoned me, much like my grandfather had felt years ago.
Initially, I expected to meet only four family members, with the eldest being my grandfather’s niece, along with her daughter and two grandchildren.
But to my delight, word had spread about my visit, and more relatives converged on the village.
They came to share tales of the past and to listen to stories about the family who had migrated to Canada after the war.
Amidst simple, traditional meals, often accompanied by local village wine and, of course, rakia, we shared stories and conversations that transcended generations.
In 2016, The Hare Wine Company was founded, and from that day on, I harbored a dream – a dream of bridging the old world with the new.
In 2023, that dream became a reality with the release of ‘Haretage,’ a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from both worlds.
The newly unveiled 2021 Haretage Cabernet Sauvignon stands as the embodiment of this dream, a tribute to my Bulgarian heritage and an invitation to connect with your own.

The Wine: Haretage 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon
Haretage is a harmonious blend crafted from 75% Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Niagara Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in a medium-bodied, fruit-forward masterpiece. As you lift the glass to your nose, notes of black cherry, red currant, and violets will delight your senses. On the palate, Haretage unfolds with flavors of blackberry, cocoa, and a subtly smoky finish.
Pair this exceptional wine with Peppercorn Steak, BBQ Ribs, Bold Cheddar, Grana Padano cheese, or Feta Cheese.
While John and The Hare have garnered numerous international accolades for their wines, John takes particular pride in Haretage – a wine inspired by his family’s heritage.
