Paul Tobey Trio

Monday, January 23rd
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

A Melodic Journey Through the Great American Songbook
Though the media has compared Paul’s right hand to that of Oscar Peterson’s and his sound to Bill Evans, though very flattered by such praise, Paul dismisses the comparissons by such generous reivewers. Paul describes his sound as melodic, gentle & patient. The audience will find he savours and almost caresses the tune – staying true to the melodies of the composer. Paul is playing his favorite melodies from the Great American Songbook.

Paul Tobey

This multi-award winning jazz pianist has had a career of a different sort.  By 2001, with eight albums to his name, Paul was the only Canadian jazz artist signed to New York label Arkadia Jazz when he received some devastating news. The Musicians Clinics of Canada diagnosed him with severe tendonitis in both forearms. While this was a career ending medical diagnosis & soul crushing news, Paul was soon after diagnosed with severe Tinnitus. To a musician making a living as a recording & touring artist who had just broken into the US market, this heartbreaking news sent Paul into an emotional & financial downward spiral.

With a young family in tow, Paul had no choice but to reinvent himself. He first grounded himself by walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Then within 2 years, Paul had new accreditations as a Professional Certified Trainer and established himself as an Award Winning Digital Marketer.  He became the co-founder of the first Training Company in Canada to offer digital marketing training. His success saw him serve thousands of companies in North America helping them generate tens of millions in new sales. Fast forward 18 years, as the pandemic halted many business operations, Paul’s son Adrian wisely said to his father “It’s time dad.”

Heeding his son’s advice, Paul began to test the limits of his arms at the piano, while at the same time building a new YouTube channel branded “Jazzmentl”, which currently serves over 4,500 jazz students worldwide. This concert is Paul’s first come-back performance since his last guest appearance at Carnegie Hall. Paul will be performing his favourite songs from the Great American Songbook. We hope you enjoy it!

Neil Brathwaite Group is led by saxophonist Neil “Bee” Brathwaite. He has performed and recorded in various musical genres including R&B, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Country, Rock and World Music.

Amongst the artists that he has worked with include George Clinton, Danilo Perez, Wynton Marsalis, Salome Bey, Deborah Cox, Molly Johnson, Slim Gaillard, Kelis, Leroy Sibbles, Jacksoul, Jully Black, Johnny Reid, The Philosopher Kings, The Headstones, The Dream Warriors and Eddie Bullen.

“Bee Thankful’ is the title of Neil Brathwaite Group’s debut album released in spring 2022. The music touches on a wide range of compositional influences from the mind of the leader Neil Brathwaite. The history of this group dates to their many years playing together as the regular Monday night house band for a soul food/Caribbean restaurant in downtown Toronto called Harlem Underground. Unfortunately, in 2019 the restaurant closed its doors but the vibes that echoed through those walls every Monday night are still alive and captured on “Bee Thankful”.

Alex Bird &
The Jazz Mavericks

Monday, March 6th
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

A mix of old classics and new original tunes. Juno Nominees Alex Bird & the Jazz Mavericks are on a mission of opening up a brand new chapter of the Great American Songbook, and taking that spirit and music to modern audiences.

Alex Bird & The Jazz Mavericks

Alex Bird & The Jazz Mavericks have taken centre stage on the Canadian Jazz scene. Alongside songwriting and piano partner, Ewen Farncombe, Bird is creating timeless and heartfelt originals for a modern audience. This talented team has spent the past four years producing something that is completely unique, three original albums in three years. 2022 brought JUNO nominations, reviews from around the world, and even the crafting of “Canada’s Thanksgiving Anthem” The Sweetest Moments, which was broadcast across the country with a national ad campaign & interviews on CBC, CityTV, and many other news outlets. 2022 also brought Bird and The Jazz Mavericks to iconic stages from headlining the Horseshoe Tavern to opening for The Jackson’s at Strangers in the Night Toronto, to debuting at Upstairs Jazz in Montreal. To cap off 2022, Bird and Farncombe released a surprise duo album of 11 originals entitled, “Songwriter”. This is just the beginning of some of the brightest lights in contemporary jazz.

Alex literally grew up with the classics. As a young boy he was taken to hang around the Toronto jazz scene, and had the opportunity to see and meet many of the greats along the way; Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Oscar Peterson, Mel Tormé, Ray Charles, Cleo Laine…the list goes on. Without even knowing it, his musical training developed, sitting around at smoky jazz clubs into the wee small hours of the morning.

“Every now and again, an act emerges from the cosmos and shakes up the planet. One of those ground-breaking bands is Alex Bird and the Jazz Mavericks. Bird and his group of talented players are rewriting the textbook for vocal-infused Jazz. Joining the stable of contemporary jazz creators like Michael Bublé, John Pizzarelli, and Esperanza Spalding, Bird proves to be every bit as talented and deft as his counterparts.” ” – Brian M. Owens at METRONOME MAGAZINE (USA)

“In this world, of ordinary singers, extra-ordinary singers, I’m glad there is Bird. Check him out, and beg for a tour someday.” – George Harris at JAZZ WEEKLY (USA)

The New Orleans influence began early in Roberta’s career when she joined the legendary Toronto New Orleans band “Kid Bastien’s Happy Pals” and held the piano post for 14 years.

Jacob Gorzhaltsan:

Jacob Gorzhaltsan is a Juno-nominated multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Toronto, Ontario.  Born in Jerusalem, Israel, to parents who are both visual artists, Jacob moved to Canada at a young age and began studying music shortly afterwards. Early on in his musical pursuits, Jacob was fortunate to attend a workshop and play with his clarinet-hero, Buddy DeFranco — a moment that continues to inspire his passion to this day. Subsequently, Jacob joined the Toronto All-Star Big Band (TABB) at a very young age, further developing his love for performance and the jazz tradition. Jacob was fortunate to study with a plethora of local Toronto musicians, and enjoyed four years at Humber College’s B.A. of Music program.

He now performs and records extensively (both as a sideman and leader) with numerous groups in Toronto, and has played in various venues across Canada and the United States. He has had the pleasure of being a part of an incredible cast and crew for several concert productions and recordings with Soulpepper Company in the past few years. He is honoured to have shared the stage with Jackie Richardson, Denzal Sinclaire, Kevin Breit, Noam Lemish, Amos Hoffman, Alex Bird and the Jazz Mavericks, Pedram Khavarzamini, Kalyna Rakel, The Israeli-Iranian Music Initiative, Heavyweights Brass Band, Travis Knights, Mike Ross and many others.

Jacob can be seen regularly playing at venues all around Toronto and the surrounding-area. As well, he is an active music educator, teaching woodwinds and music theory.

Jack Zorawski:

Jacek “Jack” arrived in Canada from Poland in 1986 and wasted no time establishing himself in the Toronto traditional jazz scene.  As a young man, Jack travelled all throughout Europe playing “Dixieland” music gaining valuable experience that has served him well in the Toronto music scene, throughout North America, and Japan.  Toronto has long had a vibrant traditional jazz scene and Jack has played bass with just about every band since ’86!  In addition to traditional jazz, Jack has also established himself as a versatile bassist leading his own “piano trio” releasing his CD entitled ‘First Train’ in 2006, and working with legendary and versatile performers such as pianist extraordinaire, Bernie Senensky,  the great Peter Appleyard,  fellow countryman, the legendary composer, violinist, saxophonist and lyrical player Michael Urbaniak, and many years with jump/jive/blues singer/songwriter Big Rude Jake.  As a founding member of Red Hot Ramble, Jack has not only provided his wonderful bass playing, he has established himself as a prolific composer of original songs now in RHR’s repertoire!

Glenn Anderson:

Born and raised in Toronto, Glenn has been playing drums for close to four decades now. Well known for his hard-swinging, yet sensitive drumming, Glenn is a favourite rhythm section member for many vocalists in Southern Ontario, including such artists as blues-jump musician/songwriter Big Rude Jake and Canada’s ‘Sweetheart of Swing’ Alex Pangman & Her Alleycats. In addition, Glenn performs with various instrumental ensembles ranging from trios to big bands like The Galaxy Orchestra led by reed master/pianist/arranger Ross Wooldridge.   Duke Ellington was quoted as saying “There are two kinds of music, good and the other kind” … Glenn can be found performing with traditional country group Colonel Tom & The American Pour at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto or on tour with legendary jazz pianist Gene DiNovi at The Parry Sound Festival of Music … it’s all good music as Duke says! As a young kid, Glenn heard many a record at home of some of the greatest traditional jazz artists of our lifetime and he fell in love with the music of New Orleans…. fast forward to Toronto where Glenn has been a mainstay of The Excelsior Jazz Band for close to 30 years and has and continues to perform at some point with almost every Traditional Jazz band in Toronto over the years! In 2003, Glenn released his first CD under his name entitled “Swingin’ The Blues”.  In 2011 Glenn and his long time friend and rhythm section bassist Jack Zorawski decided it was time to put together their own band with a decidedly fresh approach to the music of New Orleans from a Canadian perspective – Red Hot Ramble was born and Glenn has, along with his band mates, introduced a vibrant, exciting and inviting band to the Toronto music scene and beyond.
